NORFULTHING - “S/T” EP (FSI-044)

If there’s one thing you need to listen to this Bandcamp Friday, it’s NORFULTHING. Formed in Helsinki, Finland in November of 2021, NORFULTHING play brutal death metal that is just tech enough to make you pay attention to the finer details. Littered with film + TV samples, their self-titled debut EP delivers 6 crushing tracks that draw blood from old school influences with a new school approach — touching on themes of addiction, sobriety, and the effect they both have on an individual’s state of mind. Plus some good old fashioned gore splattered across the whole EP for good measure. NORFULTHING executes this balance flawlessly, creating what is in my opinion a perfect debut EP that worms its way deeper into your brain with every repeat listen. I am absolutely thrilled to bring their debut to cassette on Frozen Screams (FSI-044).

I worked closely with the band to find the right balance of raw filth + sleek presentation, which I think we achieved when we combined the gritty J-card artwork with a slick black / white split-color pro-tape + reverse print labels. Clocking in at just under 20 minutes, with 3 tracks per side (or at least that’s what the tracklist says). We added a secret song at the end of the B side for the physical release only.

An outstanding Extreme doom death album, in the best tradition. The funerary atmosphere reminds of Evoken ('Centuries of ooze" bears striking similarities, for my delight). It is overall sharp, dark, hypnotic and unrelenting. One of those rare convincing new bands that hold proud the legacy of the biggest names. Bertrand Marchal
